Greenville is an up and coming metropolitan center, and best known as the home of East Carolina University and Pitt County Memorial Hospital, the flagship of University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina. Besides being a level one trauma hospital, Pitt Memorial is the teaching hospital for ECU’s Brody School of Medicine and serves over 29 counties. East Carolina University was begun as a teacher’s college in 1907 and today boasts over 104 bachelor of science degree programs, 74 master’s programs, the Brody School of Medicine, and the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences. ECU also has a popular athletic program with a nationally known football team. Go Pirates! Sports Illustrated has named Greenville as “Sportstown USA” for its widely diversity of athletic outlets. Little League Baseball is quite popular in Greenville, as the boy’s team was third in the Little League World Series and a girl’s softball team won the 12 and under softball world series. In BMX pro biking, Dave Mirra and Ryan Nyquist call Greenville home. Greenville Recreation and Parks has over 25 parks, as well as recreational and gymnasiums they manage. Greenville is located one hour east of Raleigh and two hours west of the Outer Banks.
