Shad Festival Grifton North Carolina 2008 April is the time of the year for festivals, festivals, and more festivals around Greenville and Pitt County. If you want to get out and enjoy the warm weather that is sure to be on its way this month, a great excuse would be the Shad Festival in Grifton, NC.

It is the oldest festival in Pitt County and the 2nd oldest in Eastern North Carolina. This festival takes pride in all the volunteer work to make it a very successful festival. It relies solely on volunteers and has no paid employees.

What is Shad?

It is a fish related to the riving herring. It swims upstream from marine waters and spawns in rivers around the area. When the festival first started back in 1969, the mayor said “You don’t have to eat Shad at the festival.” This mentality from the first mayor of the festival gave a meaning of ‘fun’ to the whole festival.

This year’s Shad starts on April 14th and lasts through the 20th. The first day of the Shadding will start with midway rides! The theme for this year is: “Pirates of the Contentnea, a Shadabration”. Tons of activities for families will take place throughout the festival from arts, crafts, fishing, pet show, flea market, to a parade. Get out with your family and enjoy the fun!

View the Shad Festival Website for up to the date information on all the activities.

Now are you ready to get your Shad on?

Oh, and who is “Mo Shad”?
