Photos: Pitt County Relay for Life 2008
April 29, 2008 7:00 amThis past weekend on April 25 and 26 was Pitt County’s Relay for Life. This wonderful cause brought people of all ages to South Central High School to raise money to help fight cancer.
To kick off the event, there was a cancer survivors walk (Pictured Above). The leader of the walk was Riley. She was the main speaker of the night along with her parents. They have created a new nonprofit organization to support children with cancer along with their families. This new organization is called Riley’s Army.
History of Riley’s Army:
Our daughter Riley was diagnosed with a Wilm’s Tumor in May 2006. Initial treatment required surgery to remove her right kidney and 6 months of outpatient chemotherapy. Routine follow up confirmed relapse of her cancer with metastasis to her lungs June 2007. Riley has endured an intense schedule of chemotherapy in the hospital approximately every 3 weeks for the past 9 months. We are so thankful that her scans reveal she is cancer free, but Riley remains on treatment for a possible additional year.
Despite us both being physicians, Riley’s diagnosis of cancer threw us into a world of treatment that was difficult to navigate. Our medical experience is a blessing that helped us on this journey and also allowed us to see potential ways to help other families in similar situations. They are seeking responsible volunteers that want to help children and their families by volunteering their time to help sit with a child, making food, praying, and many more small tasks that will mean a lot to a family. You can help make a difference in a life! Sign up to be a volunteer for Riley’s Army in Eastern North Carolina.
The luminaries lighted the stadium Friday night at South Central. The candles lit up the track along with the stands. This was one of the coolest photos ever! Luminaries were used to spell the word ‘HOPE’

BlogGreenville hopes everyone had a great weekend at the Relay for Life and wants to thank everyone who pledged and supported this year’s event! What was your favorite part of Relay for Life?
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go sign up as a volunteer for Riley’s Army.
